Happy Mardi Gras!

It’s Fat Tuesday! Happy Mardi Gras, Laissez les bon temps rouler! Here in Knoxville people don’t celebrate Mardi Gras, yeah I thought that was crazy too! In fact the first year I was here it took me weeks to find a kind cake. Mardi Gras is always so much fun, it makes nice photos, it’s a good time with friends, it’s your chance to be happy while loading up on cheap plastic beads, what’s not to like. Here is one of my photos from the last Mardi Gras I covered in Galveston…throw me some beads…

Basketball portrait

On Saturday I went over to make portraits of the University of Tennessee senior basketball players. I had these grand plans for some really cool photos and well you know what they say about the best laid plans. I had to shoot right after practice and I wasn’t able to get them in their uniforms. Did I mention that I was only given ten minutes to work with them? Yeah, that’s right ten minutes total! I did however manage to make eight portraits, two group photos and six individual photos, in nine minutes…wow!

Helen and Ellen

Friday I had the chance to photograph Love Kitchen co-founder’s Helen and Ellen. They had been sick with the flu which later turned into pneumonia and were being released from the hospital and I was there. These are two wonderful ladies, their organization Love Kitchen cooks meals and delivers them to home bound people and others in need. They were recently featured on Opera and on the new show Secret Millionaire as well for all of the work they do in the community. What made me happy about photographing this two laddies is the way they keep looking at each other and smiling. They are genuinely happy and it shows in their smiles and the way they interact, it’s also infectious when they talk.

Basketball crashing

So I’ve been to several basketball games since my last post of “one more game”. I guess it should have read one of several more games. In fact I have another game tonight. The last game I went to on Saturday was over at West High School, they have a really good girls team this year and I’ve covered the last few games over there. The good thing is I get to know who is who and how they play. The downside is that they have one of the darkest gym’s in the United States with no place for me to set up lights…doh! During this last game there was a lot of crashing, it started to look a little like basketball bowling with people falling down and loose balls everywhere. I thought I would post some of the crashes from the night, and when it’s over they were happy so I’m throwing in a celebration photo of the coach getting hugs.

Widow portrait

Well it’s been a busy few days again and I have made some photos that I really like. So let’s see if I can get caught up on the blog. This last weekend there was a candlelight vigil for a man who was killed two years ago in a drive by shooting. No one has been arrested in the shooting and the family is still looking for answers. I went over to their house on Friday and made this photo of his wife holding his photo. I still believe in right, wrong and justice for everyone, I hope this family finds the answers they are looking for and is able to find peace.
